Brazil surprised few punters as they cruised to a 2-0 victory over Serbia on Wednesday evening to win Group E and set up a last 16 tie with Group F runners up Mexico.

Goals from Paulinho and Thiago Silva assisted by Coutinho and Neymar respectively were enough for the Selecao on a night that saw few bumps in the road for one of the tournament favourites.

Neymar had a host of opportunities to score but was frustrated on every occasion, and beyond one difficult cross which was fumbled by Alisson, Serbia never really looked like scoring.

Elsewhere in Group E, Switzerland and Costa Rica played out a 2-2 draw to see the former qualify for the last sixteen and the latter go down swinging as they were eliminated.

Blerim Dzemaili gave Switzerland the lead before Kendall Watson’s equaliser for Costa Rica, and Josip Drmic’s 88th minute strike for the Swiss failed to win the game as Bryan Ruiz squeezed home a penalty thanks to some bad fortune for Yann Sommer only two minutes later.

Switzerland will face Group F winners Sweden in the next round, while Serbia and Costa Rica were eliminated.
